With the announcement that Phoenix Gas is to raise the price of gas to consumers by 30% (an average £120 per year per customer), is the fact that a third of households in the north suffer from fuel poverty acceptable in this day and age?
With the spiralling cost of oil and gas, it is clearly time for the government to drop VAT on fuel, and implement a system of subsidies on home heating oil before the winter sets in.
Living in warmth is not a luxury- it's a necessity, and the government has a responsibility to ensure that needs are met in this area. Many people will have to choose betwen spending money on food or fuel- there shouldn't be a need for such a choice in our society.
