Meant To Kill

Arson attack was meant to kill. Last night the home and car of SDLP MLA, Eugene McMenamin was doused in petrol before an ignited stick with petrol soaked rag was thrown at his home. His election agent, SDLP Vice-Chair Eddie Espie, has called on all democrats to rally around Eugene McMenamin following the latest in a spate of attacks on his home and family in Strabane.

He said: “We have got to move on from ritual condemnations and realise that what is happening is an attack, not only on Eugene McMenamin but on democracy and all democrats. This latest arson attack in which his family was subjected to was insult to the electorate in West Tyrone and across the North. It is the culmination of a planned political campaign”.

”Those of us who have been subjected to this type of political persecution find it deeply offensive when the attacks are described in some quarters as a form of advanced hooliganism. The hooded heroes who sprayed petrol on Eugene McMenamin,s car and home before igniting it, were acting on political motives”. “Quite simply, they are trying to make it impossible for Eugene to carry out his democratic responsibilities". "

It is time for all democrats to rally around and put a stop to this type of persecution and to the political demonisation which creates the poisoned atmosphere in which it breeds. There has got to be a clear and unambiguous dividing line between the democrats and the hoax-bombers and sprayers of noxious inflammable liquids”.

This is totally out of order. Eugene McMenamin is one of the hardest working politicians in the country.

Excellent post Parnell. Nobody deserves to be treated like animals. Last evening a politician gets attacked, today they kill a man. The country has moved on and away from this. Only a few diehards remain but its over. Will somebody please tell these idiots its over.

As a republican let me say, " the dissidents do not speak for any body other than themselves".

Isn't McMenamin the most attacked politicial in Europe. If they are trying to intiminadate Mr McMenamin forget it. "Faceless cowards that come out at night", Mr McMenamin I agree.

As a colleague and friend of Big Eugene let me say, He has always did his best for the electorate of West Tyrone. They may try to shut him up but they will not ever succeed, no matter, how hard they try. God knows they have tried hard enough and often enough. Eugene, you fight the good fight, well done.

Peace is taking hold throughout the country. For a few old habits are hard to let go off. The times have changed and for the better but the underlying threat remains.

Violence which once could flare up in an instant has for the most part gone. Gone because it didn,t work.

After 30years the main players have left the stage and others are leaving. Thats the way things pan out.

Eugene McMenamin was attacked again for no other reason than he is a democrat. Thats what makes all democrats angry.

In the final analyis the roadmap to a full solution in the peace process is democracy. All other means have been closed down.
