The Civil Rights Movement and its role in the North is certainly an issue that has provided the letter columns and the local commentariat with much material and will, no doubt, continue to do so as events take place in various parts. Anyway, the commemoration programme to mark the 40th anniversary of civil rights will be launched officially on Thursday 27th March (today week) at 6pm in the Linenhall Library, Belfast. The organisers (of whom I am not one) say that all are welcome and that there is a fáilte roimh gach aon duine.

Sounds like an interesting programme of events that they've lined up.
So if I understand this...it's the 40th anniversay of the movement itself.. Because there wouldn't be a lot for the Irish of the north to party about civil rights would there? Or did I miss something.
Well Lucille - it depends on what you mean by civil rights - I think of it as 1 man/woman 1 vote, good standard housing for all plus the right to go out at night etc without fear of getting blown up or shot becuse your face didn't fit or you happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some people think that rights are a 1 way street but rights also mean responsibilities.
