I was devastated to learn that SDLP Councillor Michael Cole tragically passed away this evening. Having had the pleasure to work with Michael over the past few years, and witnessed his year as Mayor of Newry of Mourne which drew to a close just a few weeks ago, I can say that he was a true gentleman and a thoroughly decent man.

Michael Cole, Rest In Peace
The people of Mourne, the GAA and the SDLP will miss Michael sorely, and my thoughts at this time are with his loved ones.
Rest In Peace.

El Mat,
Saw this on the BBC website today.
A dreadfully sad story.
Sincere condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
Michael was a true gent. As his political opponent I can safely say that he treated everyone with the respect they deserved, whether they were on the same political side as himself or not. Michael was one of the few people in the SDLP that I had any respect or time for. His work on behalf of disabled children and the GAA was commendable and admirable.
RIP
Michael will be sadly missed by all his friends and colleaguses in Newry and Mourne - a true gent and a great councillor
