Welcome to Belfast

It's the summer and we're enjoying excellent weather the last few days. The city centre and brand-Belfast is booming. Naturally Belfast is attracting quite a few tourists at the moment. One of the main attractions and a great place to start touring the city is Belfast City Hall. However, this isn't the case for tourists using Google Maps, which currently believes Belfast City Hall is located in Dargan Industrial Estate! Dargan Road is located off the M2 motorway and is home to many warehouses, but not Belfast City Hall. Dargan Road is not a tourist attraction!

Google Maps reliably informs me that Belfast City Hall, Dargan Road, Belfast, is located 3.4 miles from Donegall Square North where the real Belfast City Hall is located. The real Belfast City Hall also boosts a Big Wheel, city centre locations and many high-street stores around it.

Even worse, if you type 'Newry, Ireland' into Google Earth, it zooms in to somewhere in Wicklow!

Same with 'Derry, Ireland' being in Co. Laois. However if you use 'Derry City' or 'Newry City' then it works.

Also, I see on the map it now says 'Londonderry/Derry' - I'm not criticising this - I guess it's progress.

Yeah, and someday they might progress even further and just use the latter ;)

I think this has been caused due to the current renovation of City Hall. The Lord Mayor's Parlour has been recolated to Dargan Industrial Estate. So the map is wrong but I can see the 'logic' behind it.

Yes- that would make sense actually. Well noticed!

Was in Belfast yesterday doing a spot of retail therapy - the place was buzzing - glad the bad old days are gone when we couldn't go shopping without being afraid of coming home in a body bag. By the way is Niall the youngest councillor in Ireland??

He's the youngest SDLP councillor. The SDLP did have the youngest councillor in Ireland but I don't think we do at the moment.

I must correct the exotically named Pierre. I'm not the youngest SDLP councillor, that honour belongs to Matthew McDermott in Lisburn, but I am the youngest councillor in Belfast.
