Enough Is Enough

I'm not going to bother analysing the respective views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict- there's plenty of that already going on elsewhere on the net. But on a purely humanitarian level the current onslaught by the Israelis must be stopped immediately. This rubbish that they want to avoid civilian casualties is wholly unsustainable. If you bomb places that are packed with civilians like schools, you're going to kill them. It's simple really. There's nothing to be gained from killing swathes of innocent people- it'll simply serve to create a new generation of angry combatants.

And while the Israelis may have the superior firepower, censure must also fall on Hamas. What do they hope to achieve by firing rockets at Israeli communities? They know perfectly well how the odds are stacked on the military front, and for every few people that they kill in Israel, dozens of Palestinians will be killed in return. By now they should know that if you tread on the paw of an angry dog, it'll take a lump out of your leg. Regardless of whether their ideology is right or wrong, so long as Hamas launch pointless attacks on the Israelis, it is their own people who will suffer. That is the reality of the situation.

The leaderships on boths sides need to step back and have a think about what they are doing. The people of the Gaza Strip are suffering terribly and absolutely nothing can justify putting them through such horror.

I couldn't disagree more (with all due respect). The Israelis had been negotiating with the legitimately elected Palestinian government. As a token in that process, they forcibly removed their people from Gaza and eradicated all signs of their having been there. This to achieve some semblance of peace. Hamas, which had avowed to kill the jews (man, woman and child) and destroy the state of Israel, seized control of Gaza from the legitimately elected government and became the de-facto government of Gaza. That de-facto government declared and initiated war on Israel. Rockets have been raining down on Israel, IDISCRIMINENTLY, for the last seven years. Every time, and there have been many, that Israel has struck back since 1948, there has always been someone screaming for a cease fire and suddenly everyone on the receiving end is a civilian. The Gazans have largely supported their de-facto government (Hamas) in their indiscriminent war on Israeli civilians. In war, civilians get hurt and usually take the brunt of it. Think W.W.II, London, Hamburg, even Belfast. Until the government that declared war in the first place is willing to talk, there are no innocent civilians. They are willing to sacrifice their whole population (except themselves) as martyrs. They are a festering sore in humanity similar to the Taliban and Al Quaida. The Israelis are doing what they must do. The people of Gaza must get so sick of war that they finally come to their senses.

But Bill, isn't that being too simplistic. Regardless of Israeli reasoning for pounding Gaza, surely nothing can justify that massively disproportionate suffering being inflicted on the Palestinian people compared with the Israeli people. Far, far more Gazans have been killed. On top of that there is the massive restrictions on the movement of basic goods into Gaza and the effective crushing of international trade out of the territory. This will simply make the situation worse, regardless of the role of Hamas.

The loss, even the pain of single child is a terrible thing. War is ugly and reprehensible. Politicians create wars and send their best and finest to become martyrs for whatever their current cause is. Nothing justifies war but it happens. Muslims all over the world are supporting the atrocities of Al Quaida, the Taliban, Hezbollah, Hamas etc. They scream for the head, literally, of anyone who offends them. I should make the point that this is not representative of Islam and probably the majority of Muslims however the radicals exist and are carrying Islam along with them. Politics are complicated, war is simple. One of the most warlike nations on earth became one of the most peaceful right after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The people who wallow in war and abuse and bullying must be eliminated so saner heads can prevail or finally sicken of the horrendous cost in human terms and begin to see reason. Nothing could justify those two atomic bombs. One can rationalize that millions of lives may have been saved but that is a rationalization not a justification. On another note, I would like to correct my spelling in the earlier. Indiscriminately. (You get old, you lose it).

Support the UC rally in Belfast tomorrow

Glad to see SDLP Youth at the rally - pity some of their 'senior' figures couldn't make a better effort - after all they are the party that supports civil liberties!

I think that some pro - Gaza protests are starting to smack of political opportunism - these people are suffering terribly and it is time to stop all violence on both sides -

Too true! BOTH sides. Lately the old expression is making the rounds again. "If the arabs lay down their arms, in one day there is no war. If the Israelis lay down their arms, in one week their is no Israel." I believe we all know that to be true.

I am not sure totally I agree with you Bill - the political opportunism I was referring to was the support of SwF jumping on the band wagon - when did the army wing ever give a toss about the sancity of life - there are wrongs onboth sides from the Israelis as well as Hamas - both use innocents as human shields - as Amnesty International - I don't think it is realistic that Israel would be wiped out if there was peace in the middle east - no one was wiped out by the peace process in NI

I agree about wrong on both sides. Personally, I think that many of the Israelis learned their lessons well from the Nazis or at least so it seems. The soldier is the first one to appreciate the sanctity of life and to realise the evil that war represents. Having said that, the soldier's job is to kill the enemy. Period. There are no civilians in Gaza. Hamas is dedicated to killing jews and especially Israeli jews. This even surpasses their delight at killing Fatah people. If Israel was disarmed, you would see a slaughter that would make the holocaust look civilised. Those innocent civilians of Gaza who were not taking part would certainly be cheering on the sidelines. The peace process in Northern Ireland is an entirely different kettle of fish.
