It seems entirely appropriate that Gerry Adams’ political education should continue at a university. Addressing a meeting at Saint Mary’s University College in West Belfast, the Sinn Féin president, local MP and MLA – he has some collection of titles – said that the economic situation was the party’s “biggest challenge”. How else could one phrase that? Wait, I know – you can’t eat a flag. Former Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader, Bertie Ahern, once characterised himself as being a socialist, it must only be a matter of time before Gerry Adams calls himself a “social democrat”.
That said, I am not sure that Mister Adams can expect to gain a history degree anytime soon. Condemning dissident republicans, ie non-subscribing Provos, Mr Adams said: “There is no way that the individuals involved in these groups can match the capability, determination and ingenuity or have the popular support that the IRA had over 30 years of armed struggle.”
If Adams defines “capability, determination and ingenuity” as an ability to kill wantonly, then the dissidents have done that. And what “popular support” did the PIRA enjoy during their campaign? They did not stand for elections – just like the dissidents.

And if those who remember the past don't inform those who don't of what really went on, the rewriting of history will continue apace. Killing 30 years ago was as unjustified as it is now. But then a sense of irony was never Sinn Féin's strong point.
In Israel, members of the terrorist Irgun/Stern Gang became valuable members of that society (insomuch as politicians can be deemed valuable) becoming prime ministers and even a president if I'm not mistaken. One even went so far as to bring about a peace deal with one of their worst enemies. Not bad for a former terrorist. At least some of the former Ulster terrorists/freedom fighters (your pick), are trying to bring about a new order. While I believe some of them are lying, conniving, back-stabbers (perfect politicians), they do deserve a chance. When all is said and done, they are still, after all, Ulster folk.
Will they get informed of what REALLY went on or more slanted and skewed propaganda from both sides? I wonder how many of the people doing the telling were old enough to know what REALLY went on or were they also treated to whatever skewed propaganda has been used to perpetuate this lunacy for generations on end? Sometimes, killing becomes a necessity. Was there any justification for W.W.II?
